For some reason I have not heard enough complaints from the moms of SC County regarding the high cost of living in our State. This morning I was watching the Today Show they had a whole segment dedicated to gas prices and the rising cost of groceries. Groceries have risen 57% this year alone! hmmmm....last time I checked our income did not increase by 57%? The one thing I keep hearing is as long as we keep paying the prices at the pump the cost will continue to rise (I read the same thing in the Wall Street Journal). We as a family are cutting back...for example during the week I am saving all my errands so that I only have to drive one to two times a week. I have started to cut back on grocery shopping to every two weeks. I am also looking into co-op's for our fresh produce to see if that is a more economical route.I am wondering what other moms are doing, if anything?
It seems like our area is not feeling the pinch? We sure are. Luckily, Jett rides the bus to school (it is part of his rights as a special needs student to be picked up door to door at no cost to us) it is a huge benefit. We are even rethinking our vacation plans for this summer and fall. It just seems like every time I turn around it is costing our family more and more to buy the exact same items from week to week. We have at least another 2 years the analysts are saying before food prices stabilize or come down. The cost of oil has caused a ripple effect for everything and now corn has sky rocketed because of the demand of bio fuels.
I am all for finding alternative routes to meet the rising demands for energy. There are more humans on the planet then ever, therefore our demand on the world food supply is at an all time high, we are living longer, therefore, our demand on medical interventions has increased. And so on....it just makes me wonder (however, & this is not a popular thought, nor politically correct) Are we really suppose to be living longer? Are we really suppose to be having children at any cost? And aren't natural disasters a way to wipe out a mass of humans in a humane way? We have set out on a path that I believe is irreversible & destructive. I am sad when someone can't have children, or when someone loses a loved one, or when a natural disaster strikes and kills a whole bunch of people, or when a loved one is very ill. But at what point do we step out of the way and let nature take its course and not intervene? I think our interventions have caused more than half of the reasons we are in the state we find ourselves in today.
I am truly praying for God to save us.

I hear you! I take the bus to and from work- I get a free bus pass because I am a University employee, so that saves me on at least a tank of gas a week! I also try to do all my shopping in one trip to economize....but it's all really hard! Even the farmer's market veggies here are going up in price because of gas prices. I do know, though, that if you have time to donate (aka work) at your local food co-op, that can really save you money on groceries, and the good (organic) ones at that. I think if I knew more people, I'd get a group together to buy in bulk, too; that was something I read about just the other day. They also do it for crops, you can buy shares in the farmer's crops and get veggies delivered in return. I think I might also do some pot gardening on my patio this summer, to grow things like tomatoes and cucumbers! I know it's long, I've just had this on my mind a lot lately! *hugs*
I am on a waiting list for our local farmers co-op. You get a box once a week full of in season fruits and veggies. It is $20 a week. It is almost the same amount that I spend at our local produce stand. I guess there is already a very long waiting list for the local farms & their coops. If prices continue to rise where will be in the next two years???
